With the holidays quickly approaching, I thought I would share some of my top gifts for a travelers. These are items that I would/do use and personally recommend. All of these products are around $30 or under in case your are watching your budget. Also, I would avoid the bigger purchases, such as luggage, unless you know him/her really well. The larger items are more personal items that the traveler probably wants to pick out on their own.

A journal is a great way for travelers to document their adventures. Even though I blog about my travels, I also keep a journal. It helps me remember everything I did during the day so I can blog about it later. And, some things I just don’t want to share online with everyone, but I still want to hold onto the memories. This is also a great gift if you aren’t sure what your traveler already has because even if he/she already has one, she can always use another! And, if you want to be sentimental, write your favorite travel quote on the first page.
I haven’t always traveled with a travel pillow. For the past several years I thought it was a luxury item that I simply didn’t have room for. I didn’t sleep well on planes, but who cared? I could manage without sleep. Well…i’m getting older, and now I need my beauty rest. And, travel pillows really do help when it comes to sleeping on planes. There are 2 types. There are blow up ones that take up little room in your luggage, but they aren’t super comfy. And there are foam ones that are comfy, but they can take up a bit of room. So, you need to know if your traveler prefers space or comfort.
I’ve written an entire post on packing cubes, so I won’t get into the details here. But, I do think they help keep everything organized when packing, and almost every traveler I know swears by them. So, if your traveler doesn’t have any, get them! And if they do have some, they can probably use more.
For the longest time, I didn’t have a waterproof phone case. Why would I need that?…I always wondered. If I was going swimming at the beach, I would leave my phone in the hotel or well hidden in my bag. But, then I went to the Blue Lagoon in Iceland. Boy, I wished I could have taken pictures of us relaxing in the warm tranquil waters. Then we went to another lagoon, and I was still without a waterproof phone case. Ugh! Now I have one and use it all the time.
A portable charger is an essential travel item for us. Even for day trips. We are always using our phone for directions, taking pictures, or to find the next cool thing to do. And, then the phone always dies at the worst possible moment. Portable chargers have saved us so many times. There is a trade-off between the charge it can hold and the weight/space, so you will want to think about the types of trips your traveler takes. If the traveler stays in a hotel every night, maybe a smaller one will suffice. But, if the traveler takes a lot of overnight buses or camping, maybe you should consider one that holds more charge.
Water bottles are another must for me. I always feel guilty throwing away all those plastic bottles. Plus, it is cheaper to simply fill up your water bottle in the hostel. (Just make sure you are in a place where the drinking water is safe!) The nice thing about the water bottles linked is that they are insulated to keep beverages hot or cold, and they are leak proof. The cool designs are just an added bonus.
Okay…to tell you the truth, I don’t have one of these travel scarves with a hidden pocket, but I’ve always heard good things about them. People will think you are just wearing a fashionable scarf, but you are actually storing your phone or passport inside it. Super clever! I might have to buy myself one before my next trip.
If you plan on staying in a hostel or flying a red eye, eye masks are a must. Sleeping in those situations are hard enough, and then the lights keep getting turned on and off. Yes, most airlines will give you one, but they are uncomfortable. Getting a nice one can make a world of difference and will last forever.
This is another item that I don’t have but wish I did have. A travel perfume bottle. Most of the time, I travel without perfume because I just don’t need it. But, there are those times where I wish I had some. Like when I’m attending a wedding or a fancy convention. In those cases, I’ll try to find a perfume sample, but it would be nice to take some of my own. To make this gift even nicer, you could fill it up with perfume or cologne for the traveler.
I love travel tracker maps. Growing up, I had a huge map of the USA and I would highlight all the roads we had driven on. I also had a giant map of the world and I’d use push pins to mark all the countries I visited. The linked travel tracker map is a bit smaller and allows you to scratch off the countries. Probably better if you live in an apartment and don’t want marker and thumbtack marks all over your wall. But, anyways, I think it is a fun way to keep track of where you have been.
