Christmas in Chicago is one of the most magical experiences in the world. It takes a special kind of person to survive the Chicago winters but anyone can enjoy a winter wonderland weekend getaway in this city. Just writing this article has me day dreaming of snow on top of The Bean, Christmas lights at Macy’s, the German Christmas market, and piping hot Gluhwein… I think I will just have to purchase the plane tickets soon! Here are my top 5 picks for Chicago Christmas attractions.
Not only do you get an amazing Christmas lights display, but the whole thing is FREE! The Lincoln Park Zoo is just north of downtown and is only a quick bus ride or a long pleasant walk away. Personally, I think the best night to visit is a snowy, chilly night close to Christmas. The snow makes the lights shimmer and glow, and it is such a joy to drink hot chocolate while strolling outside underneath the bright Christmas lights and popping inside the zoo exhibits to warm up your toes and fingers.
Visiting the Christkindlmarket was an annual Thanksgiving break tradition for my family when I lived in Chicagoland. The Saturday after eating all that turkey, we would pile on the Metra and head for the quaint German style Christmas market. There are tons of tiny stalls selling wooden toys, scarfs, Christmas ornaments, and roasted almonds. There are groups of friends huddled together cheering with their glasses of Gluehwein in collectible mugs while the intoxicating smell of potato pancakes and sausage lingers in the air. And if you time it right, you may just get to hear a traditional German polka band! Aaah…there is just nothing quite like it.
If Christmas shopping or general browsing is on your mind then Michigan Ave (a.k.a The Magnificent Mile) should be on your list. During the whole month of December, Michigan Avenue is packed with tourists strolling along, locals scampering around trying to find last minute gifts, and everyone is in the spirit of Christmas. The streets are twinkling with lighted trees, and all the stores have their carefully crafted decorations displayed in full glory. (Check out Bloomingdale’s gigantic tree!)
It is a Chicago tradition to look at Macy’s (former Marhsall Fields) window displays. And, let me tell you, they do it right. There is usually a theme or short story, so make sure you are starting at the beginning and then follow the windows down the street. Also, don’t forget to go inside and check out the ornaments on Holiday Lane and get a glimpse of the magnificent tree in the Walnut Room.
If it isn’t too bitterly cold, or if you have some hand and feet warmers, ice skating in Millennium Park is the perfect way to end the day. It is a magical experience as you glide on the ice while tiny snowflakes dance around you and all the lights from the skyscrapers twinkle in your eyes. The two best places to skate include a smaller traditional rink beneath The Bean (Cloud Gate) or the brand new skating ribbon at the Maggie Daley Park where skaters can experience “alpine in the city.”
